  • News

On the coming Saturday the Kiel Week 2021, in its 140th year, will officially start. The Kiel Institute for the World Economy, a founding institute of the Kiel Centre for Globalization, will again offer public presentations on various economics topics based on its current research work. There will be four such Kiel Week 2021 presentations provided by the Kiel Institute and three of them will be given by KCG researchers.

Monday, Sep. 06, 2021, 6pm at the Kiel Institute:

A Supply Chain Law for Germany – Can it Work?

Prof. Holger Görg, Ph.D. (KCG Managing Director)

The initiative to introduce a supply chain law in Germany has been intensively debated. This presentation will look at the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed law, both from a German perspective and from the perspective of developing countries. The presentation will be followed by an open floor discussion.

The presentation will be in German. For participation, please register here.

Tuesday, Sep. 07, 2021, 6pm at the Kiel Institute:

Avoiding Carbon Leakage: Possibilities and Limits of a CO2 Border Adjustment

Prof. Dr. Sonja Peterson (KCG Senior Fellow)

With the increasingly stricter emission targets in the EU and Germany and the accompanying higher CO2 prices, the relocation of industrial production and value creation and the associated shifting of emissions may become a problem. In its Green Deal, the EU thus plans to introduce a CO2 border adjustment. The idea behind this is to create a level playing field by requiring imports into the EU to pay a CO2 price at the border for the emissions generated during production. This is theoretically elegant and effective but complicated in practice. The presentation will give an overview of the problem of carbon leakage and discuss the possibilities and limits of border adjustment.

The presentation will be in German. For participation, please register here.

Friday, Sep. 10, 2021, 6pm at the Kiel Institute:

The Global Coffee Trade and Opportunities for Development for Coffee-Growing Countries

Dr. Wan-Hsin Liu (KCG Coordinator)

For many, it is hard to imagine to start a day without coffee. But who actually benefits from the global coffee consumption? In our study in cooperation with the International Coffee Organization (ICO), we take a closer look at the global coffee trade over the last three decades. A special focus is on coffee-growing countries and their development opportunities through integration into the global coffee value chains.

The presentation will be in German. For participation, please register here.

All presentations will be in German. If you are interested in attending the presentations, we kindly ask you to register in advance due to the limited capacity in the lecture hall.
